Dwayne Johnson wasn’t first choice for ‘Fast & Furious 5’: Who was going to be Hobbs?

Released in 2011, it was one of the highest-rated films of all time

Dwayne Johnson no era la primera opción para 'Fast & Furious 5';...

Justin Lin was the director in 2011 of ‘Fast & Furious 5’, a film in which the public would meet one of the most important characters of the saga, who would later end up having his own film. That is Hobbs, the special agent in charge of catching Vin Diesel and his family. It is said that this was the film that established the saga as an action film, leaving car racing aside.

12 years later, ‘Fast & Furious’ is still very much alive and they are about to release film number 10. Although Hobbs stopped appearing in film number 6, due to disagreements between Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel, he was able to release his own film alongside another character in the series, Shaw, played by Jason Statham, giving rise to ‘Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw’.

Who was going to be Hobbs?

Johnson wasn’t the first choice for Hobbs, though, although pitting two Hollywood musclemen against each other was a no-brainer. The initial plans were very different, looking for a less action-oriented, more deadpan Hobbs.

The idea was to have a veteran, with experience, giving the character more psychological and strategic characteristics than physical ones, but the chosen actor would not have been able to perform the scenes that were seen later in the film, giving the movie a much slower pace.

The character was originally slated to be played by Tommy Lee Jones, although it is not known if the franchise officially offered him the role, but together with Kurt Russell and Helen Mirren he would have made an interesting veteran trio.

However, the action-packed tone of the film led them to choose Dwayne Johnson. The Rock has become one of the most sought-after faces in Hollywood, with 22 million in his pocket just for filming ‘Black Adam’ in 2022.
