BLACKPINK member Jennie is gearing up for her solo comeback with the new single, “MANTRA.”
On September 29, KST, Jennie’s self-established agency, ODD ATELIER, dropped a teaser of the song through its YouTube channel, creating a huge buzz and anticipation.
But Jennie’s styling in the teaser has caused some speculations of her being inspired by the first-generation icon of K-Pop, Lee Hyori.
After a post on Instiz went viral, pointing out this similarity, many netizens agreed that Jennie’s teaser reminded them of Lee Hyori. For some, it was reminiscent of her “10 Minutes” era, while others felt it was similar to “U Go Girl” styling. Some, however, felt that it was not specifically Lee Hyori that Jennie was inspired by, but rather the retro fashion trend making a comeback. A few also outright accused the BLACKPINK member of copying Lee.
- “I didn’t think about it that way but now that you’ve mentioned it, it does seem similar. I guess we’ll have to see more to find out.”
- “If you’re talking about the clothes, though, that’s a very famous fashion trend.”
- “For a moment, I thought it was Lee Hyori in the photo on the left.”
- “Wow, you’re telling me the one on the left is not Lee Hyori?”
- “It’s a bit too much to compare her with Lee Hyori, LOL. If Lee Hyori were active now with her usual popularity, she would’ve probably taken over BLACKPINK as a solo artist.”
- “To be honest, it seems like she’s copying her a lot, LOL.”
- “Isn’t she just curating a similar image??? We could say she is trying to bring the Lee Hyori vibe. If it fits well, then what’s the problem?”
— “I agree. Why is everyone so angry…?”
