Cat as Sweet as Honey Finds a Way Back to a Life of Purrs and Cuddles

One couldn’t find a sweeter kitty than Honey, a white and tabby princess who found herself struggling on the streets of Harlem. She used to have a family, but they abandoned her to fend for herself. Like many friendly house cats these days, she was doing her best to make it in a dangerous world.

Would you pass a sweet cat like Honey by if she approached you on the street? Well, many people overlooked this little wanderer. But finally, her luck changed thanks to Little Wanderers NYC. Although overwhelmed with abandoned cats, they found a little extra room for Honey.

Honey on the streets of Harlem, Little Wanderers NYC

“Honey is yet another abandoned house cat that found herself seeking shelter in Harlem anywhere she could; under church stairs, school yards, benches, concrete slabs and urban sprawls of decay. She begged people for rescue, for food, for shelter, but it never came,” Little Wanderers NYC shared.

She Finally Got Her Wish to Come Back Inside

Who knows how long Honey had to hide out, wondering what became of her former family. But she quickly adjusted to being safe and content indoors again. It was all she ever knew and she didn’t have the survival skills she needed to make it outdoors for much longer. While feral cats are remarkably resilient, they, too have so many hardships trying to get by. Through TNR (trap, neuter, return), they can at least live without so many territorial disputes, be vaccinated, and stop producing more kittens needing rescue.

However, it was another temporary stay on the way to a foster home.

“…And then her fate forever changed- she was rescued today! She is so happy. She cuddled right up on a little embroidered tablecloth and is so content. But unfortunately, she’s in a very tiny situation in East Harlem and is looking for a foster,” they shared.

Sweeties Like Honey All Over the City

We can’t imagine why someone dumped this Honey pot, but she was so happy to go back to purrs and cuddles. Unfortunately, rescuers are finding similar friendly cats all over the place since the pandemic.

“It’s been one heck of a rescue year. Friendly abandoned cats are ALL over NYC. It’s been a constant struggle, and we can never catch our breath,” the rescue shared.

Not long ago, people were adopting cats and dogs in record numbers. But now, things have changed.

“It was not long ago that adoption of cats and dogs occurred at record rates. During COVID-19, people flocked to shelters and rescue groups. Videos of empty kennels were commonplace. But with the cost of caring for animals skyrocketing and people moving to housing where pets are not permitted, shelters and rescues are filled to capacity,” Little Wanderers shared.

Right now, the best way to help animals like these is to support your local shelters and rescue groups. You can follow and support the nonprofit Little Wanderers NYC on FacebookInstagram. Learn how to volunteer, foster, adopt, or donate on their website.
