When Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl in 2020, it ended a wait 50 year by fans to see their team scoop the NFL’s biggest trophy…and sparked a winning spree that has seen them clinch it twice since, including in February this year.
You might forgive the American Football team for running with its recent successes but nobody could have predicted that the NFL team would become the most marketable sporting club in the world right now – and all thanks to tight end Travis Kelce‘s very famous girlfriend.
Three years ago, most UK teens wouldn’t have known who the NFL star was…but, thanks to his year-long, high profile love match with Taylor Swift, Kansas City Chiefs is now part of the autumn collections of a string of UK high street stores.
Swift sales! Taylor Swift pictured wearing a Kansas City Chiefs sweatshirt to cheer on Travis Kelce in October last year at Arrowhead Stadium
Swift attended the opening night of the new NFL season at Arrowhead Stadium last week, and was frequently seen supporting her beau in matches last season – often wearing the team’s striking red sweatshirts and baseball-style jackets.
On the back of six UK dates, the 34-year-old singer’s popularity is at all time high in the UK, and brands including M&S, Next and River Island, alongside Gen Z favourite Pull&Bear are all stocking official Kansas City Chiefs clothing in a bid to woo Swifties to the tills.
M&S currently has four items in their kids to teens section, including a cream sweatshirt (£22), classic red sweatshirt (£20), black tee (£12) and pyjama set (£16).
And over at Next, there’s a similar branded sweatshirt in the offing in both the kidswear (£18 to £24) and womenswear (£38) sections, alongside a woman’s tee (£26) plus access to a host of official merchandise online via the brand’s third party collaborator Fanatics.
British high street retailers have been snapping up the rights to sell Kansas City Chiefs merchandise since, with this sweater on sale at River Island for £38
M&S has also taken a punt on Swift’s popularity, stocking t-shirts and sweatshirts bearing the branding of Kelce’s club
And over at Next, there’s sweatshirts in the women’s and kids’ sections, for £38 and £18 to £24 respectively
And Gen Z favourite Pull&Bear has a host of branded tops, shorts and bodysuits on sale this season
River Island, like Next, has a £38 classic red sweater, while trendy Pull&Bear has snapped up everything from bodysuits (Pull&Bear, £19.99) to tank tops (£17.99).
Kelce has seen his profile – and that of his club – soar since he began dating the Shake it Off singer.
In the last year, the 34-year-old has raked in more than $19m from his football career but has banked an estimated $5m on top of that due to a slew of endorsements, most recently a Pepsi commercial that features him dressed as a Roman gladiator.
Then there’s the podcast deal he and brother Jason recently struck with Amazon that will see the brothers rake in $100m over the next three years.
He has also branched out into acting and will appear in upcoming movies Loose Cannons and Happy Gilmore 2, as well as FX drama series Grotesquerie.Along with his many endorsement deals, the NFL star has also made a string of investments in businesses ranging from Cholula hot sauce to men’s fashion brand Indochino and truck accessories firm RealTruck.
At the weekend, the couple watched the Men’s US Open final at Flushing Meadows in New York – and all eyes were upon the pair.
The superstar couple and friends Brittany and Patrick Mahomes were at the Arthur Ashe Stadium to watch Italy’s world No 1 Jannik Sinner battle it out with American star Taylor Fritz for the last Grand Slam title of the year.
Earlier this month, Kelce issued a flat denial that there relationship might be a showmance.
The Kansas City Chiefs star scrambled to quash rumors that his year-long romance with the superstar singer is just for show after a contract purporting to show an end date for their relationship appeared on social media.
The contract is believed to be a fake, with sources close to the star telling DailyMail.com the document is an elaborate fraud that uses a logo swiped from his PR company’s website.
