The Boys‘ Susan Heyward addresses why her character, Sister Sage, helps Homelander despite his betrayal in the season 4 finale. After growing frustrated with her, not getting the results he desired, and being influenced by Firecracker, Homelander threw Sage aside, despite his initial promise that he would listen to her and trust in her plan. This did not dissuade Sage in The Boys season 4 ending, as she continued to follow through on her plan and helped him get what he wanted.
In an interview with TVLine, Heyward was asked why Sage did this, even after Homelander’s betrayal, and her response of “To see if I could” when Homelander questioned her motives. The actor related Sage’s perspective to her own personal experiences and explained how she channeled that into her performance of the character. She also shared her take on Sage and teased what may be in store for her in season 5. Check out Heyward’s response below:
I do resonate with the experience of being underestimated. I deeply resonate with the experience of being written off and people having very low expectations of you. So there’s something satisfying about having that moment for her. I think of how long she’s been alone, been isolated, been doing research and learning things, and going, “Oh, I could, I could.” How many times did she try to have a voice, to be heard, to be a positive addition to society, and how many times was she shot down? I definitely resonate with that on a personal level, and I think it puts the story in a really interesting place. It’s like how much of an agent of chaos is she? There’s always a question of her ulterior motive. So I think it’s an exciting place to kind of leave us.
What Will Sage’s Role Be In The Boys Season 5?
She May Be Even More Dangerous Than Homelander.
Sage does not like Homelander, but he is a useful tool to bring her theories to life and see if they work in reality on a global scale.
While Homelander is the face of the United States’ new fascist regime and the supe army at his disposal, Sage is still the brains behind all of this. Homelander never would have gotten there with President Calhoun as his puppet if not for Sage’s intricate planning. The Boys season 5 will see Sage’s planning continuing with phase two, the contents of which are a mystery even to Homelander, and will likely destroy the world, depending on Sage’s real motives.
With Gen V season 2 releasing before The Boys season 5, the spinoff series will be the first to show what happens next under the new regime Sage created.
Phase two will likely see Sage maintaining and extending the power wielded by Homelander and his army of supes, allowing her to destroy the society that continually dismissed her. Sage does not like Homelander, but he is a useful tool to bring her theories to life and see if they work in reality on a global scale. She upended hundreds of years of democracy in the United States as payback and see if she could, making it all the more terrifying to think about what she will now try to achieve worldwide.
The Boys, particularly Billy Butcher and his obsessive need for revenge, will continue to see Homelander as their primary threat and the one they must kill to save human civilization. What they do not fully grasp yet is that taking out Sage is just as important, as, without her, Homelander would not have the foresight and adaptation needed to maintain his power nationally or globally. Sage is arguably just as dangerous and maybe even more so than Homelander in The Boys season 5.
